 MALAYSIAN-GERMAN SOCIETY, Penang

since1962

 ABOUT US

The Malaysian-German Society was founded on 7.4.1962.  The Society in its efforts to promote friendship and understanding between locals and Germans in Penang have organised various functions and events both cultural and social to bring people together and exposing them to the cultures of Malaysia and Germany. Throughout the years numerous concerts were held bringing well-known German musicians and orchestras to Penang. German cultural festivities were celebrated with members and friends with the hope that Malaysians would understand the culture of Germany better. At the same time Malaysian festivals were also celebrated with local cultural shows to project the diversity of the Malaysian cultures to Germans and other nationalities.

The conducting of the German language classes is one of the important activities of the Malaysian-German Society. In view of the excellence in the field of engineering and more and more courses and programmes are being conducted in English language, more and more students are going to further their studies in Germany.

Karl E.Message from the President

Dear Members,

In the name of the past Board of Management I would like to thank all of you for your support during the last two years. For the slightly changed new Board I would like to express our thanks for your trust you evince for us.

A big thank you to the Board members who worked with me for the last term and who will continue spending their time and efforts fulfilling all the jobs that have to be done. Unfortunately Heike Brandt will return to Germany for good and we lost a librarian whose hard work will be a benefit for many future committees. Marc Mulzer who is well known to most of you for organizing the most visited Oktoberfest last year might be transferred within his company and therefore did not want to be nominated. To both of you all the best and thank you very much for your endless support.

A very warm welcome to the two new faces on the Board: Mrs. Petra Mueller and Mr. Tharma Raj who for sure will bring new ideas to the management of the Society.

Since the upgrade of the hardware was already finalized last year and most of you have seen our newly renovated building, we will focus the next term improving the software. The software is needed to use the hardware otherwise it will be a useless item or in our case building. With the support of the board and as many as possible volunteering members we should be able to make our society even livelier and fulfill our obligation as a friendship society.

I have noticed in the past few months that our social activities are patronized by more and more members. Our Flea Market attracts a growing number of visitors and “merchants”, the Cooking Demonstrations are always fully booked and we might have to offer them more frequently, the Fruehstueckstreffen attracts meanwhile even Japanese Ladies for a tea ceremony and our latest addition, the Children’s Playgroup, makes use of our vast compound and the football field. Even the Recycling Program developed to a hard working social gathering which helps to encourage others to take care of the environment. I do not want to list all our activities now, most probably you know about them anyhow, they are only an example for what I mean with software.

I would like to appeal to all of you to consider if you could not spend a couple of hours per day, per week or per month helping to improve our software. Please call or visit the Society and subscribe to a subcommittee which will be for the benefit for all of us.

“WE STRIVE TOGETHER IN FRIENDSHIP FOR SUCCESS”

Karl Ebinger, July 2008

Annual General Meeting 2008

On Sunday the 29th of June 08 at 4pm the Malaysian German Society conducted its Annual General Meeting at our lovely premises. Around 30 Members showed up for the meeting which ensured the quorum needed for its proceedings.

The President Karl Ebinger welcomed the members and informed them more about the activities in the past months rather than 2007 since 2007 has been covered in the Annual Report, which was sent to the members.

As representative of the German Embassy, Mrs. Wolf-Khan conveyed the greetings of His Excellency the Ambassador of the Germany Mr. Jess. She highlighted the achievements of the MGS and informed us that the Embassy is very pleased with the improvements of the past year.

During the business session all relevant issues have been brought to the attention of the members and a new Board of Management has been elected. More details of the changes of the Board are covered in the President’s message.

After the AGM the traditional group photo was taken and a nice buffet dinner was served - prepared by the Ladies of the MGS.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 30.06.2007

MGS AGM 2007

Annual General Meeting 2007

This year Annual General Meeting was held on the 30th. June 2007 at 6.00pm at the newly renovated premises of the Society.
It was attended by 40 odd members as well as a Representative of the German Embassy, Frau Susanne Wolf-Kahn
During the Opening Session, the President of the Malaysian German Society Mr. Karl Ebinger mentioned that he has kept his ears open (since he took office) for suggestions to improve the Society and has implemented them wherever possible after deliberation with the rest of the Board Members. He elaborated on the extensive renovation carried out on the Society's premises - the new lobby with the office partially out of view from the common area, free-up spaces in the classrooms and the impressive main glass door that has sensor lock for added security for the Executive Secretary. He also mentioned about the extended covered area at the side of the main building leading to the garage and used for private functions.

However he was apprehensive on two major setbacks that happened this year. First our long serving Executive Secretary, Ms. Clara Ooi has retired. Fortunately. we got Ms. Annelore Fischer to fill the post and the Immigration Department was kind enough to approve her working permit in record time.

The second setback was the announcement by the Foreign Office in Germany to cut subsidy allocated to the Malaysian German Society. It means we will receive RM12 000.00 less for this year and RM28 000.00 for next year. To offset this deficit, the Board of Management has put up new resolutions to increase income at this Annual General Meeting.

1.   Ordinary Member Annual subscription increased to RM90.00
For couple, it is increased to RM120.00

2.   Student Member Annual subscription increased to RM40.00

3.   Life Membership subscription increased to RM1000.00
For couple, it is increased to RM1500.00

4.   Corporate Member Annual subscription increased to RM500.00

Tuition fees for German Language Classes were also increased.

It was heartening to see that each resolution was graciously accepted by a majority vote. It shows that a good majority of the members present understand the Society's predicament. Our past president, Datuk Saleena even made an on-the-spot donation of RM500.00  This spontaneous gesture certainly made a difference.
The Malaysian German Society will now move forward with confidence.

After the meeting, the members had a group photograph taken and treated to a buffet dinner held at the newly extended covered area.
